Mindfulness in the classroom: Merging science and practice

Studies of mindfulness have proliferated over the past
few years. There is evidence for a wide range of benefits: health,
emotional functioning, attentional skills, working memory, and
performance. But mindfulness is not widely taught in our psychology
departments.
Our students would benefit from learning more about the science of
mindfulness practices, from Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
to its uses with college athletes. Further, it would be helpful to
know whether and how to effectively implement aspects of mindfulness
practice in the classroom itself.

Achieving Peak Motivation for Health Promotion Programs: Lessons from Elite Athletes

When faced with the challenges of making and maintaining health behavior changes, where do your clients turn for inspiration? How do you motivate your teams? In this session, we will look at a specific group of individuals for whom motivation is a keystone skill – elite athletes.  What practices do successful athletes employ that make possible their achievements? How do they stay consistently motivated? And how can we adapt their habits to achieve best practices in health promotion?  In this session, we will examine the remarkably effective behavioral and psychological habits of elite athletes and discover how their skills and motivation can be applied in health promotion settings.  We will focus on this topic by drawing upon current psychological and neuroscience research, case studies of elite athletes, and sport psychology demonstrations.

Teaching resilience: Research and applications in sport and health psychology

How do successful athletes respond to setbacks?  What factors are associated with hardiness in individuals recovering from illness? What are empirically-supported techniques for coping with adversity?  All of these questions examine aspects of resilience; they have been extensively investigated in laboratory and applied settings. When our students take courses in sport and health psychology, they often desire takeaway messages that will help them achieve greater success and/or well-being.

This talk focuses on how we can best translate the resilience research with our students in courses on health and sport psychology.
